HWT – Hereford City Branch Autumn Events

WILDER HEREFORD  –  AUTUMN UPDATES AND EVENTS

Hereford City Branch of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust are currently deep in planning an autumn/winter programme of events and working party activities, including our popular Zoom talks which you can take part in from the comfort of your own home; for those wanting to get out into ‘wilder Hereford’, there are volunteering opportunities with Hereford Yazor Brooks’ Restoration Project (HYBRP)!

Funding News

Nic Howes reports that HWT officers and volunteers have been busy securing funding for HWT City Branch and its adopted Hereford Yazor Brooks Restoration Project (HYBRP).
Senior Conservation Officer Andrew Nixon wrote a successful bid to the Environment Agency for more than £8000 that will secure Richard Fishbourne as HYBRP coordinator for the next 18 months, and also funds other HWT staff supervision and meeting time, volunteer training, equipment purchase, and hire and engagement activities.
Volunteers Nic Howes and Emil Morfett wrote and presented a successful bid for just under £3000 to Hereford City Council’s Community Grant fund; this will purchase two Husqvarna electric brush cutters, harnesses, batteries and chargers and operator training for five volunteers from HYBRP – and local residents keen to get involved.
This funding is enabling HYBRP to make progress in planning an ambitious work schedule into 2022, including clearing some of the obstructions to the flow of the brook, exposing aerated gravel as habitat, clearing trees to allow more light where appropriate, and planting trees where needed.

ONLINE ZOOMS AND EVENTS COMING UP

Wild Plants in Urban Environments on Thursday 4th November at 7:30pm with Q&A

We walk, stroll, and run down our city streets, most often without noticing the wealth of wild plants beneath our noses. Join the Hereford City Branch of the Hereford Wildlife Trust for a zoom talk by Dr Mark Spencer, who will take us on an urban wild plant safari. A well-known forensic botanist, Mark is also keen to make us aware of the wild fungi, lichens and plants which pop up through our pavements, through the cracks in walls, and along our kerbs.

To book for this free talk click on this link: or go to the Events page on the HWT website.

Tree Week 2021

November will also provide a chance to meet HWT’s new Team Wilder – Community Engagement Officer, Sarah King as she takes us on a walk around Wye Woods in Breinton to celebrate Tree Week. Click here to read more about Tree Week
It will take place on Sunday 28th November, meeting at the Green Lane end at 11am.
There will be space for limited parking in the lane, but we encourage people to walk, cycle and car share as much as possible.

HWT Hereford City Branch AGM

In December we will be celebrating both Christmas AND the city branch’s first official AGM since constituting.  It will take place by ZOOM on Tuesday December  7th at 7:30pm.
After a short meeting (promise), Tim Kaye, a director of Cultivating Learning and Nature, and a very engaging speaker, will give a talk on The Life of a Hedgerow.
More info soon on Wilder Hereford page.

We are very keen to expand our committee and to find more volunteers for our growing City Branch projects. If you are interested in finding out what we have to offer, please contact us: hfdcitybranch@herefordshirewt.co.uk
