‘The Opening Discussion on Pollution and the Wye’
There have been conflicting reports on how the Wye and Lugg’s water quality has been compromised. Natural Resources Wales has moved away from focusing on the run-off from agriculture and chicken farms, to industry, sewage and new builds. Whereas conservationists have maintained their view that the significant increase in chicken farms within the upper catchment areas of the Wye and Lugg is having a detrimental effect.
What are your views on how this should be managed? Where do you believe the pollution sources lie? How do we resolve the dilemma of needing more new houses, with the need to hold back from building any within the catchment areas? Should the management of pollution in the Wye and Lugg be managed by multiple agencies, or by one?
Come and share your views in our first discussion on this subject.

WEDNESDAY 30 JUNE 2021
I shall give a short presentation about the world trade in cotton, production and consumption, and their environmental impacts. Cotton is a valuable cash crop but requires very large quantities of the increasingly scarce resource of water and is a significant elements of excessive consumption in the west. Should we introduce a cotton tax equivalent to the sugar tax to reduce excessive consumption and waste? It will be brief, highlighting a range of concerns, giving much time for us to discuss, explore our views and what policies should be developed.
Link to follow next week.
We shall have a summer break during July and August; starting up again, on ZOOM in the first instance, Wednesday 1 September 2021.
