City Nature Challenge 2023

During 28 April – 1 May 2023, over 450 cities across the world will be taking part in City Nature Challenge. This is an international bioblitz-style competition, where cities from across the globe compete to see who can make the biggest number of wildlife observations, who can find the most species, and who can engage the most people over 4 days in April. In 2022, over 1.6 million wildlife records were submitted during the event! Last year, 14 cities took part in the UK.
New cities who would like to participate in 2023, including the city region of Hereford, are encouraged to join in. Anyone can set this up; societies, universities, organisations, charities…you! NHC can provide you with the resources and support that you need to host a successful city-wide 4-day bioblitz event. City Nature Challenge uses the iNaturalist app so that citizen scientists from across the city can easily submit all wildlife records, and get feedback from actual scientists, experts, and other naturalists. This way, everyone can get a better understanding of the species that are living around us, and how they can be protected.

The Natural History Consortium (NHC) is a charitable collaboration of 14 research, media, policy and conservation bodies, delivering large scale collaborative public engagement events since 2003.  They work together on a shared mission: to develop, test and disseminate best practice to engage everyone with the environment and natural world. They have hosted Bristol & Bath’s City Nature Challenge for 6 years and would like to enable other cities to do the same.
