The hot dry weather that we are currently experiencing means parched lawns and meadows, but has given butterfly numbers a welcome boost. Sightings in our garden have included Comma, Peacock, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, Small Copper, Brimstone (an early butterfly but can be seen all summer) and a blue butterfly – possibly Common Blue, though blue butterflies rarely seem to stay still long enough to get a firm ID.
Two national events celebrate these aspects of our countryside. National Meadows Day this Saturday, 5th July encourages everyone to get out and enjoy this unique habitat, and take action to protect it. The Big Butterfly Count starting on Friday 18th July asks people to count their local butterflies to build up a nationwide picture of how they are doing.
Read on in the newsletter for Herefordshire based wildlife events plus lots of other things going on. As ever, our local groups are working hard, actively promoting the green agenda.
