News from Low Traffic Future

The group ‘Low Traffic Future‘ feel that early optimism that this Government would “move fast and fix things” on sustainable transport has unfortunately faded somewhat. They still await a new Integrated National Transport Strategy (as promised by previous Transport Secretary Louise Hague before her mysterious departure from her role). However it has also become clear that the Labour leadership are determined to build roads and the wrong kind of homes in the wrong places, on the premise of generating economic growth. Low Traffic

Hills Ford Rally

HGN has received the following from Ledbury Area Cycle Forum: Last September quiet lanes were closed to the public to allow for a car rally, centred in Ledbury and nearby villages. The organisers, Hills Ford Rally, are applying to Herefordshire Council to permit a repeat this year. Herefordshire Council received numerous complaints after last year’s event, some of which are summarised in the report ‘Hills Ford Rally feed back‘. As a result, Barry Durkin, the Councillor responsible for allowing the road closures, is canvassing for the public’s response, either directly, or via local councils. His email

New battery and small electric item household collections coming to Herefordshire

Herefordshire Council refuse and recycling teams are now collecting old batteries and small e-waste on their regular rounds. The trucks are fitted with special containers for them. But don’t put them IN the bin – leave them on top. Put batteries in a separate plastic bag and be sure to remove batteries from any gadgets you’re recycling. Jackie Jones, HGN Co-chair reports: “I’ve now tested it – a plastic bag of batteries was collected from on top of my green bin last week, and an old Sky box from the top of my black bin this week. It’s brilliant!!” Click

Warm Homes Local Grant funding for Herefordshire residents

Herefordshire residents can now apply for the Warm Homes Local Grant scheme. The aim of the scheme is to improve as many ‘fuel poor’ homes as possible, helping to reduce energy bills for the occupants, and cut carbon emissions. The scheme aims to support low-income Herefordshire households living in the least energy efficient homes and will follow a whole house approach. This means ensuring that the building has appropriate windows, doors and insulation before looking at heating systems. For full details of the scheme and to apply, click here.

Petition against airport expansion

Flight Free UK have set up a petition in response to the recent approval of Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow airport expansions. They are asking Parliament to listen to the advice of the Climate Change Committee and not to expand airports. Airport expansion is bad for people living near to airports because of an increase in noise and air pollution, and will also result in rising emissions, at a time when everyone should be doing all they can to reduce emissions. The petition is here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/714927 They are trying to reach as many people as possible. At 10,000 signatures the petition
