July 15th 10.30 – 12.30 Meeting at the Victoria Bridge at 10.30am and ‘bashing’ till 12.30pm. Himalayan balsam is an invasive species that crowds out native plants and erodes the riverbank. Each plant has about 800 seeds spreading up to 7 metres away! Just a reminder as to why might be receiving this HGN newsletter, having previously received newsletters from our project The Great Collaboration – Local Actions for a Healthy Planet. In September 2023 HGN transferred the web-based toolkit over to a new organisation, Place-based Initiatives Ltd (PBI) to expand the provision across the UK. Herefordshire Green Network’s programme will now concentrate on activities in this county and be known as Great Collaboration Herefordshire. A new film documenting the evolution of The Knepp Estate in West Sussex from intensively worked and sprayed farmland which supported very little in the way of wildlife to a rewilded area full of birds, butterflies, insects, native mammals, plants and all the complexity of a fully functioning ecosystem is currently in cinemas: it is on at The Courtyard in Hereford on Tuesday 16th July. The Big Butterfly Count organised by national charity Butterfly Conservation is an annual citizen science survey that helps monitor the health of the environment. The survey involves counting butterflies and moths for 15 minutes in bright, preferably sunny weather. The count is open to everyone and you can join ranger lead walks to help you identify the species. For more details and to join in, click here

Monday 22 July 2024 10:00am – 12:00pm, Town Hall , Hereford , HR1 2PJ A guided wheelchair friendly walk taking in the wildlife of Hereford city that has been designed by the City Branch of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust. The walk will start at 10am outside the Town Hall in Hereford. The wheeled walk is a free event that aims to help those less mobile connect with nature within the city.The route passes through quiet streets, public spaces and along the banks of the river Wye with opportunities to spot and learn about the local nature and
Spend a day volunteering in the Much Marcle countryside and help protect local wildlife. The Countryside Regeneration Trust are looking for volunteers to meet once a month at Awnells Farm to carry out conservation work and wildlife surveys. No experience needed, training provided.
