Airlines, airports and governments are relying on so-called SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) to reduce emissions from aviation. But is that realistic? A recent online discussion organised by Flight Free UK brings together three industry experts to explain if using SAF will result in the emissions reductions we need to see. The weather this year has been notable for its lack of sunshine. A long, wet winter has been followed by an indifferent summer to date, with low temperatures and high winds impacting wildlife, particularly summer insects such as bees and butterflies which have been noticeable by their absence. The Big Butterfly Count, a citizen science project run by the charity Butterfly Conservation, is asking everyone to get out and count butterflies – see the final post in this newsletter. Absence of sightings is as important to record as abundant sightings and all they ask is fifteen minutes of your time

Marches Energy Grant The Marches Energy Grant (MEG) offers free advice, energy assessments and grants for energy efficiency and renewable energy measures to SMEs from all sectors in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. The funding is also available to support community buildings. As well as the grant funding, the project will also run related networking and webinar events for SMEs and other organisations. It is depressing to note how little talk of nature and the environment has featured in the election debates and campaigning currently dominating the media. There is still time to let your PPCs (Prospective Parliamentary Candidates) know how important green issues are to you personally and for the future of the planet. The run-up to the election is a chance to raise issues and demand answers and many of the posts in this week’s newsletter urge you to action; to use your voice to move environmental matters up the political agenda.
The Great Collaboration website with its toolkit of actions, transferred from the Herefordshire Green Network last summer to the Place Based Initiative. PBI have been doing some great work, with weekly online discussions and more, and they are due to launch a Great Collaboration newsletter from July. PBI will also be picking up the Great Collaboration social media, too. Meanwhile the Great Collaboration Herefordshire team is stepping back for a while. Co-ordinator Clare Cherry, who has done a magnificent ‘temporary’ (!) job that’s lasted nearly 2 years, is stepping down. At this stage, HGN has no funding to continue
