Infrastructure concerns

Planning and Infrastructure Bill concerns UK nature organisations are warning of the threats to habitat of the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. Petition against airport expansions Flight Free UK have just launched a petition, in response to the recent approval of Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow airport expansions. HEREFORDSHIRE ELECTION RESULTS

Although HGN is a non-political organisation, we extend our congratulations to Dr Ellie Chowns, long-term supporter of the network, on her success at becoming MP for the Green Party in North Herefordshire in the general election and to Jesse Norman for retaining his seat of Hereford and South Herefordshire.

CAST YOUR VOTE AND MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

HGN Co-Chair Jackie Jones writes: Will history have been made in North Herefordshire by this time next week? Two recent polls suggest that the constituency may be about to elect its first Green Party MP. One constituency-level poll, conducted by Omnisis, and another by IPSOS, put Green candidate Ellie Chowns in first place. Another two, by Survation and YouGov, have the Green Party in second place. Now, HGN – in spite of its name – has no party allegiances. As an organisation, we want our members, their families, friends and neighbours, to go out next Thursday and vote for whatever policies and person

RIVER WYE POLLUTION

Leigh Day is a firm of solicitors representing some members of the Hereford community in relation to the pollution of the River Wye. A lot of their clients and the wider community have explained to them that the pollution of the river has really impacted their lives, from loss of access to the rivers and the ecological decline to affecting their livelihoods and property values. Leigh Day are holding a series of events in Hereford and the wider Herefordshire area in mid-July about the pollution and the legal claims. Please click on the link for more information.

USING YOUR VOICE

It is depressing to note how little talk of nature and the environment has featured in the election debates and campaigning currently dominating the media. There is still time to let your PPCs (Prospective Parliamentary Candidates) know how important green issues are to you personally and for the future of the planet. The run-up to the election is a chance to raise issues and demand answers and many of the posts in this week’s newsletter urge you to action; to use your voice to move environmental matters up the political agenda.

CAMPAIGNS AND HUSTINGS

The Bill is the only proposed legislation before the UK Parliament that ensures a comprehensive and joined-up approach to the emergency.
