In our efforts to effectively address human caused climate breakdown and ecological collapse we must also acknowledge and address fundamental issues of inequality in the world.
This summer, inspired by Black Lives Matter and standing solidarity with all who experience racial discrimination, violence and abuse, HGN are sending out materials to support the development of virtual or actual Reading Rings in our membership groups around the county: over the summer months team up with your friends, colleagues or just within your own household – read books, watch films, and take time to discuss and share your thoughts about the issues and emotions they raise for you.

Our recommendations are based on support materials that are being used by other organisations in the UK, and on the work of Check Your Privileges / Social Graces.
Reading: Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Renni Eddo Lodge. “I can no longer have this conversation, because … I can’t have a conversation with them about the details of a problem if they don’t even recognise that the problem exists. Worse still is the white person who might be willing to entertain the possibility of said racism, but still thinks we enter this conversation as equals. We don’t”.
For families: Black Virtual Library. This is an amazing virtual library of books that read aloud when clicked. From tinies to teens there is something for all ages, and the reading materials cover a range of racial equality issues and history.
Film: Black British filmmakers have for decades depicted and chronicled protest against racism and injustice. In this BFI article, Ashley Clark uncovers work that has for too long been overlooked or actively suppressed.
