We stand in solidarity with

Black Lives Matter logo

In our efforts to effectively address human caused climate breakdown and ecological collapse we must also acknowledge and address fundamental issues of inequality in the world.

Inspired by Black Lives Matter, and standing solidarity with all who experience racial discrimination, violence and abuse, HGN will be sending out materials to support the development of virtual or actual Reading Rings in our membership groups around the county.

Over the summer months team up with your friends, colleagues or just within your own household – and share your thoughts about the books, films and other materials we will be circulating.

Welcome to Week 1

Our recommendations are based on support materials that are being used by other organisations in the UK, and on the work of Check Your Privileges / Social Graces.

Reading: Me and White Supremacy, Layla F Saad. “A bracing, highly useful tool for any discussion of combating racism” (Kirkus Review). Me and White Supremacy: A 28-Day Challenge to Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor leads readers through a journey of understanding their white privilege and participation in white supremacy, so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on black, indigenous and people of color, and in turn, help other white people do better, too.

For families: A Parents Guide to Black Lives Matter – resources, activities and tips for families to enable conversations and empower children to work towards racial equality.

Film: The BFI have developed a list of 10 films about black British experience. “A significant – if under-seen and underrated – body of work exists that’s dedicated to exploring black British life in all its complexity, diversity, sadness and joy.”
