Power Beyond Borders: An Invitation from Reclaim the Power!

Right now, our world is at the precipice of many tipping points. The problems we face are huge in scale but people and communities all over this earth are taking action to challenge and dismantle the system that is threatening to push us over the edge.

This July, will you join us at Power Beyond Borders  a mass action camp in South East England where we will take direct action against new gas infrastructure driving climate breakdown, and show solidarity with migrants at the sharp edge of the UK’s Hostile Environment?

Taking action

Reclaim the Power is a national network dedicated to working towards social, economic and climate justice through direct action. This camp will follow in the tradition of RtP’s previous camps and take on the infrastructure locking us in to climate breakdown.

This year, we’re focusing on Drax Power and their plans to build the UK’s largest gas-fired power station this autumn. If this happens, our energy system will be tied to fossil fuels for decades, condemning us to catastrophic climate breakdown. Instead, we need to grab our chance to transform our energy system to one that meets people’s needs while using much less power, all of it clean and renewable.

We are in the middle of a climate emergency, and the effects are already being felt, by those who have done least to cause it. It’s now up to us to turn off the gas and show investors and the government what real climate action looks like. Will you join us this summer?

Showing solidarity

The camp will also be a step in a new direction for RtP. Based on the aims drawn up by some of the groups most affected, we are working with other groups to create a space for us to collaboratively learn how to challenge the Hostile Environment for migrants through self-education, exchange, skill-share and network building.

The process of organising this camp is a steep learning curve for us. We aim to be open and honest with ourselves and tread carefully as we learn more about the power, privileges and oppressions that are embedded in the context of our work, the aims of this camp and our own ways of thinking and behaving. We recognise that this takes hard work and commitment.

Would you be interested in being a part of Power Beyond Borders?

There will be plenty of ways to get involved at the camp itself, including contributing in workshops and skillshares as well as the option to participate in direct action against new gas infrastructure.

At this stage, it is vital that we get the message out as far and wide as possible, especially in the South East. Is this something you could help us with? We’ve put together a promo pack filled with flyers, posters, draft tweets, social media posts and a draft email, which you can find and download on Google Drive:

We’d love you to use the pack to share details about the camp through your networks. Over the next few days, we’ll also be sharing our new promo video on our social media channels, so do keep an eye out!

Practical info

The camp will take place from 26 to 31st July at a secret location in the South East of England, which will be revealed closer to the time. We are working hard to make it as accessible as possible.

There will be coaches to and from the camp leaving from both London and Brighton. Keep an eye on the Facebook page or contact us on powerbeyondborders@protonmail.com to find out if any transport is being arranged from your area, or if you are interested in organising transport. If you’re a big group, and you’re based outside London or Brighton, you may want to arrange your own minibus.

You can read more about the camp on our Facebook event, and of course click attending so we know you’re coming! And you can read more about Reclaim the Power on our website.

If you would like more information, have any questions or would like us to come and run a workshop to give more details about Power Beyond Borders, don’t hesitate to get in contact with us at powerbeyondborders@protonmail.com.

We hope to hear from you and see you in July!

In Solidarity,

Sarah
On behalf of Reclaim the Power
