From Nat and Alan: Details of upcoming talks are below. Please, as ever, do pass on to individual friends and family, but please do not share this access information publicly on social media.

WEDNESDAY 7 APRIL 2021 Population Matters with Alastair Currie

We have a new guest speaker, Alastair Currie, head of campaigns and communications of the charitable organisation Population Matters.

Population Matters, formerly known as the Optimum Population Trust, is a UK-based charity that addresses population size and its effects on environmental sustainability. It considers population growth as a major contributor to environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, climate change and the well-being of many people.

The group promotes ethical, choice-based solutions such as family planning and empowerment of women and girls,  through lobbying, campaigning and awareness-raising. Its president is Sir Jonathon Porritt; to quote the patron, Sir David Attenborough, “All our environmental problems would become easier to solve with fewer people, and harder – and ultimately impossible – to solve with ever more people.”

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEDNESDAY 14 APRIL : “Assembly of humans and more than humans” with Perry Walker

Resolving the climate crisis requires us to move beyond an exclusively human way of seeing the world. It also requires thinking and acting in much longer time scales than we are used to. The Assembly gives you the opportunity to try this out.

Please be aware that:

  • It will be longer than the normal session – it starts at 7:30pm, but will finish at 9:30pm
  • You will need to use a laptop or Desktop computer as a larger screen will help the process work better
  • The session will be interactive, so please be prepared to take part

You will need to book to attend, as places are limited – Therefore, please let us know by email (alan@walden1.plus.com) that you wish to attend, thank you.

What will The Assembly of Humans and More Than Humans explore? The Assembly uses role play to decide on a planning application for wind turbines in rural Wales. In terms of More Than Humans, people play roles such as peat bogs, bats, eagles, rare earths and atmosphere – alongside an energy company and local farmers. In terms of time, roles vary from Ken Saro-Wiwa, the Ogoni activist murdered in 1995, to future generations in Greenland. All participants negotiate on an equal footing.

Most of the time, you will be in a small group with a facilitator. You’ll have cards with information, poetry etc. to help you take on your role.

It is going to be a fascinating evening with a difference!
