31 MARCH 2021 “Conspiracy Theories Why do people believe them and how do they evolve? ” Nigel Higgs
Conspiracy Theories seem to have risen in number over the last 5 or 6 years, what with Brexit, Trump, Covid-19 and PPE suppliers. But if we know why things occur a certain way and we have factual evidence to show this, why do we find that some people believe that something else is happening? Something underhand, run by secret organisations, all trying to take over the world… Well, maybe not quite that extreme but, when something untoward happens, there is a tendency within people to latch on to answers that fit their view of the world, and their prejudices.
This session on Conspiracy Theories will explore why people believe them, how they evolve, why they gain credence, how can we identify them, and is there any way of counteracting them. As we explore our way through this we’ll look at some conspiracy theories to see why they are such a problem.
One last point – the objective of this session is to explore Conspiracy Theories together, as many of you may also have insight into this intriguing topic.
So, the games afoot! Come prepared. Or just out of interest if you prefer.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEDNESDAY 14 APRIL :- “Assembly of humans and more than humans” with Perry Walker.
Resolving the climate crisis requires us to move beyond an exclusively human way of seeing the world. It also requires thinking and acting in much longer time scales than we are used to. The Assembly gives you the opportunity to try this out.
The Assembly uses role play to decide on a planning application for wind turbines in rural Wales. In terms of More Than Humans, people play roles such as peat bogs, bats, eagles, rare earths and atmosphere – alongside an energy company and local farmers. In terms of time, roles vary from Ken Saro-Wiwa, the Ogoni activist murdered in 1995, to future generations in Greenland. All participants negotiate on an equal footing.
Most of the time, you will be in a small group with a facilitator. You’ll have cards with information, poetry etc. to help you take on your role.
For this evening you would need a laptop or Desktop computer. To enable us to plan and set up please let us know by email that you wish to attend, thank you.
It is going to be a fascinating evening with a difference!
