Left Bank Talks and Discussion Evenings – coming up

From Nat and Alan: Details of upcoming talks are below. Please, as ever, do pass on to individual friends and family, but please do not share this access information publicly on social media.

Win-Win Democracy Wednesday 16th December 7.30pm – 9pm

Citizens assemblies have become all the rage in the UK, Ireland and other parts of Europe. That’s marvellous. However, the fact that they are a process will limit their appeal. Win-win democracy is about changing the outcome for which politics aims, from win-lose (also called zero sum) to win-win (positive sum). We are not, though, presenting this approach as a panacea. For instance it is difficult to implement if you cannot get parties in conflict to sit down in the same room. Perry Walker, Talk Shop, will explain more about the concept and suggest why Win-Win democracy is both desirable and feasible.

Christmas Through the Ages Wednesday 23rd December 7:30pm – 9pm

To celebrate the last discussion evening of 2020, we plan to have a lighthearted look at the history of the tradition of Christmas, followed by some mince pies, mulled wine, tinsel and an impaled angel atop a tree – all virtually, of course. So, feel free to Deck your own hall(s) with Boughs of Holly and bring forth your stories of Christmas’ to share.

New Year Break! On Wednesday 30th January there will be no discussion – take a break, have a drink and chill… until… We’re back on the 6th January for a talk from Richard Priestley.

Q for the Bypass Wednesday 13th January, 7:30pm – 9pm

Herefordshire does not divide into two blocs, one for the bypass, one against. The results of a ‘Q-methodology’ analysis carried out by Talk Shop seem to suggest there are three distinct views among those in favour, and four among those against. There is a lot of common ground between all these groups, including across that for/against divide. Could this common ground aid in developing policy for traffic and bypasses that is less contentious? Perry Walker from Talk Shop leads us in discussion.

The Herefordshire 2030 Project Wednesday 27th January, 7:30pm – 9pm

Mark Thomas and Perry Walk will talk about the 99% organisation’s Herefordshire 2030 project. The aim of the project is to develop a clear, compelling and fact-based picture of how Herefordshire in 2030 can be fairer, greener and more prosperous than today. It will also show the actions that will need to be taken to achieve that progress, and how they can be realised. And it will develop a practical plan to engage those who will need to make it happen. Mark and Perry will ask you to input your ideas and invite you to join the project.
