From Nat and Alan: Details of upcoming talks are below. Please, as ever, do pass on to individual friends and family, but please do not share this access information publicly on social media.

Thinking about Health & Well-being… Following the council purchase of the Maylord Orchard shopping centre, it’s great to hear the good news from the Herefordshire Coalition that several empty units have been taken over by new independent retailers bucking the high-street trend. This week we bring you a further idea gaining momentum in relation to our urban spaces and building back better with a talk from Guest Speaker Dr Malcolm Rigler on the concept of Health and Well-being Hubs to diversify the ‘high-street offer’. Please join us to share your thoughts!

Thinking Beyond Retail with High-Street Health and Well-being Hubs
Wednesday 28th October, 7.30pm – 9pm

In so many Towns and Cities around the UK, The High Street is in trouble. Boarded up shops, numerous charity shops and betting shops. Guest Speaker Dr Malcolm Rigler talks about the opportunity the council’s purchase of The Maylord Shopping Centre might present, offering Hereford the opportunity to explore new ways of working that involve the diversification of  The High Street Offer into “Health, Education and Community Development” . In developing such initiatives Hereford might well be able to take the lead in the Midlands Region for the much needed  creative change in the High Street Offer  that has long been called for by REVO (an organisation that supports retail) and many other agencies. Talk from guest speaker, Dr Malcolm Rigler, followed by discussion.

A Radical Proposal for Land Ownership  Wednesday 11th November, 7.30pm – 9pm

Should private ownership of land be replaced by collective public ownership and responsibility for managing the land with a Land Commission determining how land is used. Adam Forman believes this would address inequality at its core with the greatest source of wealth being land, rapidly increasing in value. Adam puts forward this radically redistributing proposal and invites your responses. Adam Forman has a lifelong commitment to reducing inequality and more recently in addressing the housing crisis in London – he lives in Hackney.

Food, Farming and Biodiversity Wednesday 18th November, 7.30pm – 9pm

Richard Priestley continues his eye-widening series of talks ‘Big Questions and Unthinkable Answers’. Richard poses the question ‘Can we feed 9 or 10 billion of us well, and also restore global biodiversity and sequester a lot of carbon’. Well sorry for the spoiler but his answer is YES and he’s going to tell you how. As almost all current farming systems are damaging soils and biodiversity, he explains that pretty much everything needs to change. There are a lots ideas, technologies and farming systems which show how we could achieve all these desired goals simultaneously and these will form the basis for Richard’s talk. It will be followed by Q&A.
