HWT Hereford City Branch Field Trips: Butterfly Safari and Farm Walk

Summer Butterfly Safari:  For all you butterfly lovers, a double treat on Sunday June 27th.

We have probably all seen a Red Admiral butterfly, but have you seen a White Admiral?  With its characteristic gliding flight and striking bands of white across its brown/black upper wing, it isn’t in fact, white at all.  For a chance to see this stunning butterfly join Martyn Davies, local butterfly expert, for a guided butterfly hunt at Joan’s Hill Farm on the edge of Haugh Wood.

Meet at 10:30 Sunday June 27 at Haugh Wood Car Park. The walk to Reserve is about ¾ mile. This event is not aimed at children and numbers limited to 20.

Later the same day at 2pm, the hunt moves to the south wood to look for Hairstreaks, Speckled Woods, Silver Washed Fritillaries, Wood Whites, and Large Skippers – just some of the many butterflies that you may see flitting along the edges of the rides on south side of Haugh Wood on our butterfly safari – and the prize might be a sighting of the White Letter Hairstreak. It will be led again by Martyn Davies, who has written a definitive study of the Haugh Wood White Letter Hairstreak.

Meet at 2 pm Sunday June 27 at Haugh Wood Car Park

Risbury Farm Walk

Join Richard Thomas in a farm walk around Risbury Court Farm. With Hereford cattle, sheep, grassland, and traditional orchards, the Thomas family have always managed Risbury Court with an eye on the environment, believing that the farm should function as an ecosystem as much as possible. With the introduction of rotational grazing five years ago, and research into regenerative agriculture, the focus has shifted towards reducing costs and making better use of the sunshine that hits the farm every day. All lamb produced on the farm is grass fed only and the cattle are fed a predominantly grass based diet. And in the middle of the farm, a bonus – Risbury Camp, an iron age hill fort.

This is free event, but numbers are limited so booking is required.

Meeting point

Humber Woodland of Remembrance Car Park, Risbury, HR6 0NE – the Woodland Cemetery is part of the farm and a suitable starting point for the walk.

Date
