h-Trees!

First initiated in 1975, National Tree Week is the UK’s largest tree celebration annually launching the start of the winter tree planting season.

And here in Herefordshire we have h-Trees! Our own slant on Tree Week, with some fabulous events around the county. From the 24th November to 3rd December 2017 and hosted by Herefordshire Tree Forum, here is the full list of events …

 

Friday 24th November from 1:30 – 4pm Coppice Woods Walk with Kington Tree Warden Richie Cotterill Visiting local Hazel & Sweet Chestnut Coppice Woods & some of Kington’s Community Orchards. 5 mile walk taking in some fairly rough terrain. Suitable for resilient children and dogs on leads. Friday 24th November 7:30 – 9pm “Coppicing: the history, biology and utility of an ancient wood harvesting system” presentation by David Lovelace – Countryside Historian: People have worked with trees for thousands of years, co-creating rich & diverse habitats supplying sustainable wood products. Saturday 25th November 9.30 – 4pm Tree Week info stall in High Town Hereford. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and Herefordshire Tree Wardens will be available throughout the day to share information on tree related issues & wildlife, h.Trees events and activities and the recently formed Hereford City Branch of the Wildlife Trust.

Saturday 25th November from 5 – 7:30pm. Sunday 26th November 10am – 3.30pm Sprucing up Hereford! Volunteers needed to tackle overgrowing vegetation and collect the accumulated litter at the Aldi/Sainsbury’s junction/underpass on Whitecross Road, Hereford HR4 0AW Meet on the Sainsbury’s side of the underpass on the Great Western Way. Adults only, no dogs. Limited disabled access. Litter picking equipment will be provided but please bring your own gardening and pruning tools as well as gloves. Please wear suitable clothing – sturdy boots, old clothes and waterproofs. You’ll need to bring your own refreshments though cake will be provided! Monday 27th November Hereford City digital tree mapping presentation with David Lovelace and Nic Howes. 7-9 pm De Koffee Pot, Left Bank, Hereford HR4 9DG. Funded by Hereford City Council, the city’s trees are being mapped and logged digitally by a growing team of community volunteers . Sunday 3rd December from 1:30pm – Dusk “Ancient Trees of Hergest” A Walk & Talk with Rowan Griffiths – Hergest Gardener Catalogue & International Dendrology Society & Richie Cotterill – Kington Tree Warden. Visiting fabulous old trees in Yeld Wood and on Hergest Ridge, Park Wood, Haywood Common and back to Hergest Croft Park. About 6 miles, with some steep or muddy sections. Throughout and beyond Tree Week come and interact with The Biophilic Wishing Tree at Queenswood Country Park, Dinmore Hill, Nr. Leominster, Herefordshire, HR6 0PY Add to the love of life wishing tree and based on your responses to questions you will tie different coloured ribbons to the tree at Queenswood. This event is a New Leaf, h.Energy project run via the Queenswood and Bodenham Lake partnership (Herefordshire Wildlife Trust & New Leaf) to celebrate National Tree Week, the UK’s largest tree celebration annually launching the start of the winter tree planting season.
