The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy are seeking views on options for the future support for low carbon heat, beyond the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which closes at 11:45pm on 7 July 2020 – see this link.
The consultation states that “Heating of homes, businesses and industry is responsible for a third of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, and de-carbonisation of heat is one of the biggest challenges we face in meeting our climate targets.”
The proposals appear to include some positive elements but are being criticised for being inadequate to support the vital changes that are needed if we are to reach our Zero Carbon and Paris carbon reduction targets.
Feedback reported to HGN includes the following:
- The grant is fine but too small and general – the estimate is that it would cover less deployment than is occurring now – so much for a green recovery !!
- It has cliff edge deployment caps that will create an under-invested industry and response from consumers
- It is only for 2 years so is not going to inspire industry investment or consumer confidence
- “…we are disappointed at the modest level of ambition in both the Green Gas Support Scheme and the Clean Heat grants.” NFU
