Glaciers and Climate Change in the European Alps

Free public lecture by Dr Derek McDougall, principal lecturer at the University of Worcester, at Herefordshire & Ludlow College.

Glaciers in the European Alps are retreating at an alarming rate, which has implications for those who rely on them and the meltwater they release. The geological record reveals, however, that mountain glaciers have fluctuated many times, and around 6,000 years ago they were probably less extensive than they are today.

What does this mean, if anything, for our understanding of present-day changes? This talk considers the causes and evidence for geologically-recent mountain glacier changes in the Alps. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

The lecture takes place on Wednesday 23 October; arrivals from 17.45; talk starts at 18.00. The event is free, but please reserve places by 18 October: studenthub@hlcollege.ac.uk
