“Focus on”: Green Schools Project

The Green Schools Project Herefordshire has been running for 3 years and aims to see every school become a model of sustainability. We enable young people to fulfil their potential by providing resources and support to schools to engage them in a range of environmental projects.

We acquired funding in 2018 to work with 3 Primary and 3 Secondary schools for a year we have also been able to forge relationships with the Herefordshire Green Network and the Spring Greens Educational Days- these two or three day events have been run for 4 years and are always well attended and we currently have working relationships with over 30 schools. The students are organised into mixed ability collaborative groups which take part in environmental workshops in settings such as yurts and awnings hung from the trees.

Another of our collaborations has been with Herefordshire Council and a number of very dedicated teachers. Our Zero Carbon Conference has been re-scheduled for October and is a one day event intended for head-teachers, eco-leads and eco-representatives. During the event we will have expert speakers and workshops and there will be opportunities to share best practice with schools throughout the Marches. Schools will receive a carbon audit booklet to complete before the event which will enable them to return with a carbon reduction action plan.

The events planned for this year have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and we, like many others, have begun to think about how we can provide support and networking opportunities for our local schools and communities. We have recently been awarded funding from Fastershire to produce a local website which will build on the newsletter we already send out.
